Katia Cardenas & Friends
December 3, 2017 @ 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Recognized for her radiant energy, impeccable range, and dynamic and powerful voice, Katia emerged on the local jazz scene in 2014 and has quickly become a regular at respected venues, including Dakota Jazz Club, Crooners, and Icehouse MPLS; she was even invited to sing for the grand opening of Vieux Carré (formerly The Artist Quarter) in July 2015. Deemed “the fastest rising star on the Twin Cities jazz scene,” Katia grew up on the West Coast (Everett, WA & Sacramento, CA), and was raised in a musical family on a strict diet of jazz, soul and r&b. Her father, keyboardist Mark Cardenas, is a former member of “The Time,” and appeared in Prince’s iconic Purple Rain. With a refined yet diverse musical taste, Katia has been most influenced by Ella Fitzgerald’s spirited jazz standards, Aretha Franklin’s high-powered R&B flavors and Astrid Giberto’s dulcet bossa tones. Performing an inspired and enticing variety of musical styles with the Twin Cities top jazz players, she has been described as “a young but veteran vocalist who can cover Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, yet is equally adept at modern folk/pop/blues,” with “the pipes to get over an R&B tune, but also has the instincts and subtlety to handle jazz standards.” These styles are reflected in her debut CD, “I’ll Be Seeing You ” (2016) which showcases her passion for classic American and Latin music, and the genuine simplicity of live instrumentation.
